Guild Logo Contest
Posted: January 3, 2013

logocontestThe Guild needs a new logo. For many years, we’ve used the same logo as our international. It’s a classic, no doubt, even iconic. But given our history of strength and independence, shouldn’t our local have its own symbol? Something unique to us, our region, our bargaining units and members?

Contract Bargaining Starts With ABM
Posted: December 18, 2012

On December 11, we had our first bargaining session with ABM concerning a collective bargaining agreement to cover employees represented by the Newspaper Guild of Detroit.

The Guild Bargaining Committee consisted of Lou Mleczko, President of the Guild, Tom Conrad from the Lafayette facility, Richard Hyde from the Sterling Heights facility and attorney Duane Ice. ABM was represented by Rina Alongi, District Manager; Michael Bloom, Human Resources Manager; Steven Johnson, Senior Branch Manager; and attorney Robert Finkel.

Our first meeting was devoted to learning the lay of the land about ABM’s contract with Detroit Newspapers, existing pay and existing benefits.  ABM’s customer contract would affect the length of the contract we should bargain, such as 3, 4 or 5 years. We requested information we need for bargaining, including current pay rates, copies of all benefit plans and policies, employees who are covered by benefits right now and the type of coverage they have. This kind of information help us decide what proposals we need to make concerning pay and benefits.

Our next bargaining session will be on January 15, after we get the information we requested.  At that session, each side should be in a position to make proposals for a collective bargaining agreement.

If you have further questions, please call Lou at Guild office, 313-963-4254.

Certification by NLRB

Last Thursday, The National Labor Relations Board officially certified the Newspaper Guild of Detroit as the bargaining agent for ABM employees working in Detroit newspapers’ buildings.  Now ABM has a legal obligation to sit down and bargain about wages, benefits and working conditions.

Bargaining Dates
On Friday, we sent ABM a proposal to set bargaining dates in the first two weeks of December.  We will keep you informed of when bargaining starts and what happens in bargaining.

Bargaining Issues
The Guild welcomes ABM employees.  We thank everyone for the overwhelming vote in favor of union representation and bargaining.

You should let your unit officers about any issue you think should be addressed in bargaining.  We will take your issues to the bargaining table.  So, talk to Richard Hyde, Tom Conrad or Derrick Bell or about your particular concerns. PDF
