In This Edition: Over 100 Catholic Institutions with Unions
Sometimes, when employees at a Catholic institution (like Manhattan College - see below) begin to form a union, management objects that union organization will somehow compromise their Catholic identity. To assess this claim, over the past month the Catholic Labor Network has conducted a brief survey of labor relations at Catholic institutions - schools, hospitals, and newspapers - across the United States.
The CLN is pleased to report that we have identified well over 100 Catholic institutions in the United States modeling Catholic social teaching through collaborative, mutually rewarding relations of collective bargaining with their direct and indirect (contract) employees - and this list is hardly exhaustive! Moreover, we found NO indications that the Catholic identity of any of these institutions was harmed by the presence of unions and collective bargaining.
Along the way we also identified a relative handful of Catholic institutions currently embroiled in labor disputes. Below please find the results of our survey. The Catholic Labor Network has dedicated a page of our web site to the Catholic Employer Project where an updated list of both groups will be available in the future. If your institution is missing -- from either list -- please contact clayton@catholiclabor.org with your information!
